Baskılar öyle noktaya geldi ki okul yönetimi Weinstein’a, güvenliğini sağlayamayacaklarını iletti.

NEW YORK TIMES ÜZERİNDEN BATI MEDYASININ HALİ

WEISS’IN İSTİFA MEKTUBU

Yazar Jeanine Cummings’in kitabında Meksikalılarla ilgili “ayrımcı” ifadeler bulundurduğu için turu iptal edilmişti.

Rowling’in eseri Harry Potter ile alakalı çıkacak bir oyunda bile “ Rowling’in alakası yoktur” ibaresi düşülmek zorundaydı.

For almost a decade, concept of free speech turned into a battlefield for western society. “Cancel culture” doesn’t only threatens the core values of the western world but also any country that has a culture dominantly molded by social media nowadays. This time I will be talking about the outcomes of the cancel culture and reactions towards it.

WHAT WAS THIS CANCEL CULTURE ANYWAY?

To put out shortly, cancel culture is decimation of someones career by social media based on internet posts from a decade ago or accusations towards them by other people who demands mob justice without an ounce of proof. Lynch culture usually ends when public gets their anger out, cancel culture however, does not rest until the person gets any type of damage.

Usually, people who defend this corrupted system by claiming it “purges society from awful people” yet in most cases its been used as a tool to erase reputation of undesirable individuals regardless of their innocence. Unfortunately, the liberal left of western world got stuck into this prison of culture.

BRET WEINSTEIN CASE AND DISCUSSION ABOUT LIBERAL LEFT

The argument actually started from a college professor called Bret Weinstein. He was a biologist known for his progressive identity and support for Bernie Sanders. He became focus of this story because of what happened to him while he was working for “Evergreen State College”.

In this particular school, there was a tradition that black students and workers would not go to campus for a day to protest about racial injustices and inequalities as a whole. This time around, the situation was reversed. In a paper that published by students, this time they demanded white students and workers must not go for a day, and participation was mandatory. A member of schools staff, Weinstein sent an e-mail to the school administration, stating that its one thing that an organized group of people take a day off and another thing to racially segregate kids without any consent whatsoever. School administration show this e-mail to students and things have really changed for fifty one years old biologist after that point.

Weinstein was harassed and insulted each day on campus. They were raiding his classes, even prevent him from going to bathroom. The pressure got into a point that school administration told Weinstein that they can not assure his safety in the campus anymore, which caused him to continue his classes on a nearby park.

Just imagine; a lefty teacher, gets lynched because he thinks racial segregation will cause even more racism and its done by lefty students! The situation actually gets worse.New York Times'da ne yazılacağına Twitter karar veriyor - Resim : 3

NY TIMES AND STATE OF WESTERN MEDIA

It is a current discussion in the west that even center right journalists are excluded from positions in many news outlets. These type of rumours grew stronger by the day but this situation with Bret Weinstein will summarize the outcome for all of us I believe.

One of the NY Times journalists Bari Weiss, was actually someone closed to this “cancel culture”. But her handling of this Weinstein incident caused all outrage to turn against her.

In her paper “ When the left turns on its own”; she mentioned Weinstein incident and claimed freedom of speech stopped being a value for the left, it was already normalized that center right ideology considered as far right and being attacked by buzzwords all the time but now even “ not so left “ is under threat. Without a doubt this story was news worthy. In the end, a left wing movement was demanding racial segregation and anyone critisizing it was facing a violent reaction.

NY Times decided its not that news worthy. They told Weiss to publish it on “Opinion” section. When Weiss shared the article, she faced a huge backlash. This incident actually happened back in 2017, yet she was basically became persona non grata in the eyes of other journalists.

Last week, she finally resigned. She also shared a resignation letter that summarizes the state of western media to public.

RESIGNATION LETTER

Weiss talked about many things in the letter. She was critisizing the state of western media. She claimed trying to open NY Times to ideologies that do not see it as their home. She tried to make a difference on a news outlet that ignored concerns and expectations of the common people and catered to a small but loud group of people.

According to her, one of the reason Trump got elected was this attitude of media that ignores the expectations of people and basically working against free speech. These outlets have failed to foresee Trump’s election. They also repeated same old patterns on every negative event happened after 2016. People stopped trusting media, they were even giving wrong answers in polls purposely because of fear of getting cancelled.

According to Weiss, Twitter decides what to write for NY TIMES. Twitter is not necessarily the head of the paper, but they are certainly the editor. The values of journalism was abandoned long ago.

Weiss claimed being harassed by fellow journalists and some co workers because of her opinions. She was mentioned as “bigot” or “racist” and even some of them demanded her to get fired in order to make NY TIMES a more “inclusive” workplace.

It is hard to believe an outlet such as NY TIMES is in a state like this right? Weiss was not even the only one.

Another NY TIMES editor lost his job because of a story that talks about a republican senator asking for armies intervention to protests turning violent.

Author Jeanine Cummings got her tour cancelled after “racists remarks” on her books.

A book quoted by a professor in a U.S school considered racist so he had to go to court for it.

These are just a few incidents in the tornado that is cancel culture.

VOICES AGAINST CANCEL CULTURE

A handful of socialists and a couple center right libertarians were already believing open criticism and free speech are important elements in order to fight racism in a proper manner. But cancel cultures aggresive expansion forced multiple public figures to make noise about it as well.

J.K Rowling, author of famous book series Harry Potter, were getting cancelled because of her comments about trans individuals. She was a feminist herself and an activist for LGBT rights. Yet her even a single critisizing comment towards these communities turned into a crysis that would damage her career. Even a Harry Potter game in making had to put a disclaimer saying “ Rowling has little to no involvement with this”.

A band of journalists, authors and activists including Rowling, philosopher Noam Chomsky and Bari Weiss signed a letter voicing concerns about cancel culture. According to them cancel culture was threatening all of us and the freedom of speech. Maybe academia did bow down to this culture, but it was good to see some voiced to be raised against it from celebrities.

WHY SHOULD YOU CARE ABOUT CANCEL CULTURE

If you are reading this paper, most likely you are not a westerner and you might think this is a discussion for them rather than you. Yet cancel culture exists in any society that has social media as a dominant tool.

Everyday on social media, we go after people because we did not like their jokes, we did not agree with their opinions or simply have opposing life styles. Every subject became sacred and any criticism towards it is offensive. Worst of all is, we can not get away with it by blaming it on the “uneducated masses”. Because everbody does this. Maybe you have an excuse for it because you were cancelled for who you were before but if you want a future with freedom of speech, you and me both need to think twice before incinerating a social justice mob over someone.

If our society aims to restore freedom of speech, it needs to get away from cancel culture as far as possible. Because now or then, we will need that freedom for ourselves. Sooner we realize that, the better. See you next Sunday on a new paper…
